06 Feb Behind the Scenes Time-Lapse – Family Portrait Session
That blur in the picture is me. We try and get a couple BTS shots at most shoots, and out of the few shots we do get of me working I can confidently say that at least 80% of them look like the example above, a blur. I stuck a GoPro in the corner of the room during a family portrait session last night to capture a time-lapse of what we do on the average shoot. Very very rarely do I setup a photo shoot exactly like we have done in the past. I strive every shoot to make new photography, and even in the studio there is a million different ways you can set things up. Usually this means we are setting up props, locations and posing subjects in new ways, and of course molding all of it with a custom lighting concept (which really determines the feel of the shot). It can be a bit stressful at times, but quite honestly, it’s the constant mixing things up that keeps me coming back, waking up every day wanting to do it all over again. If I’m not pushing myself at least a little bit to do something new I get bored super fast. So what all this means is a lot of prep, a lot of fussing with lighting, and a lot of running around. I think this time-lapse video is a good demonstration of that. For example, when it comes to be dialing-in one of the background lights tucked behind the furniture, watch how many times I go back and forth. The overwhelming majority of the time invested into the shoot is the setup and only a fraction into the shooting of the subject, tis the way custom built shoots go. In this video you’ll see Alice and myself setup for about 8/10’s of the shoot with just a blip of time spent shooting the family, and then it’s over. Enjoy, and I’ll see ya soon back on the blog.
